Saturday 18th April 2026, 11am - 12.15pm
Ever wondered how Lucian Freud’s prints really came to life? Join us for a fascinating and friendly talk that goes behind the scenes of one of the 20th century’s greatest British artists.
Led by exhibition curator Gill Saunders, this event explores Freud’s adventurous approach to printmaking and his remarkable collaboration with master printer Marc Balakjian.
Using rare trial proofs - some you won’t see anywhere else - Gill uncovers how Freud experimented, adjusted and pushed his ideas on the press, revealing the creative decisions behind his most compelling prints.
Gill Saunders is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Victoria and Albert Museum and previously led the museum’s Prints collection. She has written widely on modern and contemporary printmaking, including Screenprints: A History (2025), with a new book on linocuts due next year, and regularly shares her expertise through talks and broadcasts.
Come along, get inspired, and discover the stories behind the prints.
