Intaglio Drypoint Printmaking Workshop
Join us on Sunday 14th June, 10am–1pm for a hands‑on workshop introducing Intaglio Drypoint printmaking, inspired by Lucien Freud’s Etchings: A Creative Collaboration exhibition at Poole Museum.
Drypoint is a technique which shares many similarities with Etching and is great for beginners wanting to learn more about Freud’s Etchings and printmaking. The method of Drypoint printing explored through this workshop is also non-toxic, unlike traditional Etching techniques. The workshop will explore the unique qualities of Intaglio Drypoint printing through various drawing, inking and printing techniques. There will be the opportunity to use an Etching Press, experiencing how Lucien Freud’s work would have been printed by master printer, Marc Balakjian.
Working on an A6 scale, you will learn how to create an intaglio printing matrix through drawing into an acrylic plate using an etching needle. You will then experience how to ink up plates using ‘wiping’ techniques, specific for intaglio printing. You will learn how to register and print your plate on an etching press. During the workshop you will be able to make a small edition of finished prints in response to the exhibition. This is a fantastic process for translating drawing and mark making through print.
